Gillian Chan

In 1954, Gillian Chan was born in England. Because her father was in the Royal Air Force, as a child she traveled all around England and then moved to Germany with her family for three years. One way for her to cope with the constant change in residency was books.

When she was only five, she announced that she wanted to become a writer. However, she changed her mind quite often throughout her childhood and by the age of sixteen she narrowed it down to archaeologist or English teacher. She did many different kinds of jobs before she went on to university to pursue a degree in English and Education with which she graduated in 1980. Two years later, she married Henry Chan. In 1990, after teaching in high schools for ten years, she moved to Dundas, Ontario.

Gillian has always written since she can remember. However, the desire and the courage to actually have her work published did not come until she took a writing course where she received tremendous positive feedback on one of her assignments. This was the starting point of what was later to become her first published book, Golden Girl and Other Stories (1994) which is a collection of stories from the perspectives of five different students going to the same high school.

The author loves fantasy and science fiction. The inspiration for her characters comes from her experiences as a high school teacher, songs, dreams, and family history. She draws upon her many jobs that she had in banks, restaurants, and stores for some of her materials.

She has a 12-year-old son with her husband and currently is working on at least three books.
