Don Aker

Don Aker lives in Nova Scotia, where he received a B.A. in English Literature and a Masters degree in Curriculum Studies. After completing a B.Ed, he became a teacher of Language Arts even though he had wanted to become a writer since he was a teenager.

While teaching, Aker began writing short fiction for adults, and with editing help from his grade 12 students, won the Atlantic Writing Competition for his short story “The Invitation”.

Aker also received a Crossover Writer’s Grant from Telefilm Canada to adapt the story into a screenplay, which then went on to win the 1998 Atlantic Film Fest Script Development Competition.

Aker’s transition into young adult fiction began when he read in the class assignment of one of his students that she was being abused by her father, and realized that writing is a way of reaching out. Aker compares writing a story to “peeling the skin off someone’s life and [having a look] inside, and [the] reader can peel that skin back and may see a different story, but it’s still an important one.”
