Jocelyn Shipley

Jocelyn was born in London, Ontario, and now lives in Toronto for half the year, and on Vancouver Island (Parksville) the rest of the time.

She was the third of four children, and the youngest daughter. As a little girl she spent much of her time in the children’s department of the London Public library, and states that she “loved… fairy tales in which the youngest, downtrodden sister eventually triumphed over the evil folk around her.”

Her good marks in school were partly due to her mother, a school teacher. However, her class conduct left something to be desired as she was mischievous and was oftentimes made to stand in the hall outside her classroom. Seraphina's Circle is partly based on her love of participating in school sports.

Jocelyn went to the University of Western Ontario, but chose the wrong degree (Psychology) which included animal experiments, and dropped out to work in a children's mental health centre. She is married with three children and several grandchildren.

In response to the question of how long it takes to write a book, Jocelyn states: “All I can really say is that a book takes as long as the story needs, and the publishing can take what feels like forever.”

Jocelyn is currently working on two new YA books. She is writing her first historical novel, inspired by her maternal great-grandmother's life. And she has co-edited a collection of stories about mothers and daughters and body image, called Cleavage, from Sumach Press.
