Karen Rivers
An Island girl, Karen Rivers was born in Nanaimo but raised mostly in Victoria, where she still lives. (Why not? It’s a beautiful place!).
She is the author of eight books, and all but one of them are for kids and teens. Karen is one well-educated and versatile woman, having studied ALL of the following at university: writing, international relations, physiology, and microbiology. She is also a photography enthusiast and takes a whole lot of photos, as you can see for yourself on her flickr page: http://www.flickr.com/photos/karenrivers .
It seems a fair guess to say that Karen enjoys photography more than web design, as her website of one year is still only partially complete (but it must be said that what is complete is very cool!). Karen’s long blond hair, crooked teeth, and quirky humour are sure to get you interested in reading her books!
Karen’s Stellar Award nominee The Cure for Crushes (and Other Deadly Plagues) is the second book about Haley, an angsty-adolescent with a knack for dear diary humour. The first book in this series was
The Healing Time for Hickeys, which Karen dedicated thus: “To all of you who are wearing some sort of turtleneck or weird scarf or unusual neck-wrapping hairstyle… and hoping that no one notices anything…. Trust me, it’s not working.”…See what we mean about her quirky humour?!
Here’s one final statement that pretty well seems to sum up Karen Rivers, The Woman, and Karen Rivers, The Writer. Straight from the horse’s mouth (or, the horse’s website homepage, anyway), this is what Karen calls her BEST writing advice, to all you aspiring authors out there: “Live. Live as much as you can, have as much fun as possible, and give yourself a big huge break. Be nice to yourself and to other people. Don't wait until you've lost ten pounds or for your bad hair cut to grow out or your skin to clear up or until you've saved enough money.” How’s that for a philosophy to live by?
