Evil Masters: the Frightening world of Tyrants.

If you have ever been fascinated by the deeds of villains or just have a thing for by history, then this book will appeal to you. Seven infamous tyrants are profiled, from past to recent times. Vivid biographies are livened by anecdotes of court intrigue and backstabbing which would not be out of place on today’s daily tabloids. Though the book is by no means a comprehensive or detailed account of their lives, it is absorbing and focuses instead on the personality of the tyrant. This examination of the characteristics of a tyrant is intriguing and thought provoking. Recommended by Aera, Age 17

Hitler. Stalin. Robespierre. Saddam Hussein. How did they become leaders? Who gave them the right to murder innocent people and abuse their political power?

"The ancient Greeks were the first to use the word tyrant to describe a new kind of leader. These rulers were men who first won the support of the people, then overthrew the government and grabbed power for themselves...As history was to prove, few people remain pure with so much power in their hands. The English historian Lord Acton famously said, " All power tends to corrupt, and absolute power corrupts absolutely." (excerpt from page 1)

This fascinating book looks at seven notorious men and describes the common practices which unite them and made each a tyrant.
