I had not read the previous books in this series, but it did not seem entirely necessary to get the grasp of the book. I'm sure if you read the first books it would be a little less confusing in the beginning, but everything is explained in the end. The book was definetly more about the relationships between the people in the book, then between dog and owner, though the dogs did play a role. I enjoyed reading the book, though I did not enjoy the ending. I am a fan of happy endings, but this book was not bad.
