Carol Matas

Carol Matas was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba, in 1949. She earned her Bachelor of Arts in English from the University of Western Ontario in 1970. Carol began publishing in 1976. Her work has garnered numerous awards and been translated into several languages. When she was younger, Carol's favourite books were The Wizard of Oz series by L. Frank Baum. She like them because “they had great characters, strong feisty girls with lots of courage, and wonderful imaginative plots and settings.”

Many of Carol's own novels however deal with much grittier subjects, especially World War II. Her motivation to write about this subject is driven by the untold stories of the millions of children who died in the Holocaust: “they cannot tell their stories. I hope I can tell some of those stories for them.

In her spare time, Carol enjoys visiting Assiniboine Park in Winnipeg, watching baseball on TV, and following American and Canadian politics. --BG
